Skill Based Sewing With Maggie

Did you learn to sew a long time ago and need a refresher? Have you never sewn but want to learn?  Do you want to learn new techniques to add to your bag of tricks?  This class is designed to help you.  Each week, we will cover a different topic and you will have a sample to go with your notes.  You can do the entire series, or pick and choose topics that you’d like to learn. Bring your machine in good working order, or you can rent one of ours for $10.  Also bring basic sewing supplies (scissors, pins, marking pencil, seam gauge).

We will cover the following items each Tuesday from 1-3.

Class 1 - Sewing Tools, Notions, and Feet - Choosing the correct tools, notions, and feet for all of your sewing projects is the key to making sewing anything fun and easy.  Yes, there are differences in scissors, pins, and irons!  Maggie will demonstrate all of her favorite sewing tools and how to use them to get the best results.

Class 2 - Fibers and Fabrics - Learn the properties and structure of different fibers and fabrics. We will look at both natural and man-made, how each type of fabric is constructed, and how to choose the best one for your project.

Class 3 - Patterns - This class covers how to select, measure for, prepare, and read general patterns.  We will also show you how to lay out, pin, and cut out your project.  You can leave with a pattern cut and ready to sew if you’d like!

Class 4 - Seams and Seam Finishes - From serging to French Seams, you will learn how to do all of them!  Maggie will demonstrate different types of seams, pinning for best results, easing, dealing with bias, and ways to finish your seams.  You will make several samples you can file to refer to.

Class 5 - Facings and Collars - How do you finish off a neckline, armhole, or front edge? There are several ways to apply facings, collars, and binding to finish off an edge.  Maggie will show you how to trim, grade, and understitch common facings. Whether you’re just facing the edge or adding a Mandarin, notched, or lay-down collar, the techniques you use make collar and facing installation easier. You’ll be a pro by the end of this class!

Class 6 - Sleeves - Does putting a sleeve in a garment make you nervous?  It can be easy!  This class teaches you how to do set in and raglan sleeves using two different methods.  Whether there are lots of gathers or none at all, sleeves don’t have to be hard. Cuffs and plackets will be covered in the advanced class.

Class 7 - Zippers - Ahhh the dreaded z word!  Zippers don’t have to be difficult. You will learn three different techniques for installing zippers, including an invisible zipper, and make a sample of each one.

Class 8 - Corners and Waistbands - Learn how to turn crisp square corners on cuffs, waistbands, and edges with some basic techniques.  We will make a waistband with square corners and install it to show just how easy it can be.

Class 9 - Buttonholes and Hems - Buttonholes and Blind hems can both be done by hand or on the machine.  Learn to use your machine to make perfect buttonholes, sew on buttons, and put in a blind hem.  We will also do a rolled hem and see how easy it is to use a double needle for hemming knits.
