Rope Bags & Bowls -- Longmont

Rope Bag Class
This class is not only just for beginners.  If you've taken a rope bowl class before, we welcome you to come and share your projects and try some of Laura's new techniques and embellishments.  Laura has made over 800 bowls and can frequently be seen at local fairs and other venues.  Her projects are amazing and she loves to pass on her tips and knowledge.

  • Clothesline isn't just for hanging laundry anymore!  Create bags, bowls, dog beds and other receptacles with your sewing machine, clothesline, and thread. Join us and learn this technique--it's fun, easy and even a form of meditation!  Laura will inspire you with many beautiful samples that she brings to class.

Here's what you'll need for this class:
  • All items are available at Maggie's and you will get a 10% discount on class supply purchases.
  • Small bag: 200 feet of 3/16" braided premium cotton clothesline. Large bag: 300 feet. We highly recommend the rope you can purchase at Maggie’s. It is soft and easy to work with. Not all clothesline is created equal.
  • NEW Jean/Denim or Topstitch needle size 16/100. Be sure it is sharp!
  • Quality thread of your choice (we recommend Wonderfil 50 wt Tutti variegated or Konfetti). At least 1000m.
  • At least two empty bobbins. You'll refill at least 8 times to complete a bag, so if you have more empty bobbins, bring them.
  • A zigzag sewing machine you're familiar with that's in good working order.   An open toe foot helps you see where you're going, so it's helpful if you have one. An extension table for your machine if you have one.
  • Bring your awl or That Purple Thang or something similar to help guide rope under the presser foot.
  • Scissors and thread snips.
  • Fabric that will be cut into strips during class and used to wrap around the rope to create contrast.  Batiks work best since they don't fray.
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Quilt gloves if you have them
  • We'll break for lunch - bring lunch if you'd like.
