Basic Garment Sewing Technique Series: Session 2; Needles, Thread, Basic Sewing Machine Maintenance, Seams and Seam Finishes in Longmont


This basic sewing series consists of 4 four-hour sessions and will be held at our Longmont location.  This is Session 2 of the series.  It includes topics of interest to new sewists looking to master basic garment sewing skills.  Each session is presented as a stand-alone class and must be enrolled in individually.  Pick and choose the sessions you wish to attend or enroll for the entire series.  

Session 2- Seams and Seam Finishes will include the following topics:

  • Using the features on the sewing machine to accurately sew a variety of common seam widths (5/8",1/4", and 1/8")
  • Sewing straight lines, turning sharp corners and sewing curves
  • Applying various seam finishes to prevent raveling
  • Selecting appropriate thread for your project
  • Selecting appropriate needles for your project
  • Basic machine maintenance

Needed Supplies, Session 2:  Students will be provided with sample fabrics to practice covered techniques.  In addition, students should bring:
  • Sewing machine, thread, bobbin, sewing machine manual (if you have one), spare machine needles, accessory feet, foot control and power cord
  • Basic sewing supplies such as thread snips, seam ripper, making pencils, straight pins, seam gauge, tape measure

Any class supplies purchased at Maggie's will include a 15% discount.

Instructor: Andi Bechberger
Instructor Bio: Andi holds a BA in Home Economics from Adrian College, Adrian, Michigan and a Master Degree in Educational Technology from George Washington University, Washington, DC. She has been sewing since she was a teenager. "If I wanted a new dress, my mom bought the pattern and material, and I made it." Additionally, she brings 27 years of classroom experience as a Career and Technology Education Educator; 17 as a middle school Family and Consumer Science (Home Economics) teacher. She is excited to share this experience with students in Maggie's Sewing Classroom.
