Basic Garment Sewing Technique Series: Session 1; Patterns, Cutting and Marking in Longmont


This is Session 1 of the Basic Sewing Series consisting of 4 four-hour sessions, held at our Longmont location.  It includes topics of interest to new sewists looking to master basic garment sewing skills.  Each session is a standalone class and students must be enrolled individually.  Pick and choose the sessions you wish to attend or enroll for the entire series.  
Required class supplies are not included in pricing.  

Description of Session 1:  Through simulations, demonstration, and class discussion:

  • identify, read, and use information available on commercial pattern envelopes
  • identify, read, and use information available on commercial pattern instruction sheet
  • determine the correct size to cut using pattern sizing chart
  • determine the required amount of fabric, notions and supplies to complete your project
  • identify and select needed pattern pieces from the pattern envelope
  • understand and be able to use the pattern layout guide
  • identify the correct cutting lines to use for the identified version and size
  • be able to use several different options for transferring pattern markings to your cut fabric pieces

Supplies Needed for Session 1:

  • Straight pins
  • Tape measure
  • Marking pencil
  • No sewing machine is needed for this class

Instructor: Andi Bechberger
Instructor Bio: Andi holds a BA in Home Economics from Adrian College, Adrian, Michigan and a Master Degree in Educational Technology from George Washington University Washington, DC. She has been sewing since she was a teenager. "If I wanted a new dress, my mom bought the pattern and material, and I made it." Additionally, she brings 27 years of classroom experience as a Career and Technology Education Educator; 17 as a middle school Family and Consumer Science (Home Economics) teacher. She is excited to share this experience with students in Maggie's Sewing Classroom.
